This is a 2-day hands-on workshop on how to build and maintain a thermophilic compost pile. This workshop is hosted at Heritage Prairie Farms.

March 9th

  • Learn how to build an inexpensive compost cage

  • How to select ingredients for your compost recipe to enhance the growth of soil microbes

  • How to thoroughly mix and build a compost pile

  • Learn how to check moisture and take temperatures to maintain active biological growth

  • How to cool down a thermophilic compost pile if it becomes too hot

  • How to protect your compost pile from the elements

    March 16th

  • How to successfully turn a compost pile

  • How to kill weed seeds and pathogens in your compost pile

  • Identify anaerobic conditions and how to remedy them in a compost pile

  • How to cool down, mature and store your biologically complete compost

    Join Jen Stanley and Megan Litas in building and maintaining a compost pile at Heritage Prairie Farms on Saturday March 9, 2024 10-12pm and Saturday March 16, 2024 10-12pm. This is a 2 day hands-on workshop, you are expected to participate in the building and turning of the compost pile. Wear loose comfortable clothing, closed-toed shoes or boots and expect to get dirty. Feel free to bring water and snack. We will be building the compost in a covered greenhouse.

To ensure personal attention for all attendees, space is very limited, so please register quickly if interested. Cost of the workshop includes attendance to both days.
