3 Key Supplements to Maintaining Brain Health

Best Supplements for the Brain and Memory-2.png

According to Dr. Rick Davis of Biotics Research, “we are born with all the neurons we will ever have in this lifetime. Neurodegeneration is not a matter of when will our neurons die off but how fast. Neurodegeneration is not reversible but it can be slowed down. 3 early signs of neurodegeneration is fatigue, brain fog, and low gut motility (constipation). These early signs show up much sooner than Parkinsons, Alzheimers and Dementia”

What are the 3 supplements which may support brain health and slow down neurodegeneration?

#1: Hydrochloric acid (HCL) with pepsin

As we age our stomach lining secretes less stomach acid (hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and intrinsic factor) which reduces our ability to absorb vitamins B12, B6 and folate. When we are lacking these nutrients, homocystine (inflammation) increases throughout the body which can lead to dementia and strokes. B vitamins are also necessary for the communication of nerves in the gut that affect motility (bowel regularity). I prefer to supplement with Vital Nutrients brand HCL with pepsin and gentian root. Gentian root provides an astringent toning effect that helps to soothe inflammation in the stomach lining while the HCL and pepsin improve the digestion and absorption of the B vitamins and folate necessary for reducing inflammation and supporting brain function.

#2: Liquid Multivitamin

The brain requires oxygen, glucose, and stimulation/activation of nerves to maintain health. When we are low in B6 and folate we are commonly anemic which affects oxygen getting to the brain. All of the B vitamins are precursors to neurotransmitters which affect the communication of all nerves impacting all organ function and gut motility (constipation). Not all multivitamins are created equal. Many tablet forms are heated to 400 degrees to get them to bind into tablet form. Few people have the digestive power to break down these tablets. Liquid multivitamins are a more bioavailable way to ensure you are absorbing your supplements. Taking a well rounded multivitamin will ensure your getting necessary nutrients for your brain on a daily basis. Glucose is the main food source for the brain. Glucose is broken down from carbohydrates. All vegetables are carbohydrates, high in vitamins and trace minerals and contain dietary fiber which helps with gut motility. Do not only think of grains when you hear carbohydrates. Think vegetables first! One of my favorite liquid multivitamins is from Biotics Research.

#3: Omega 3 oil

60% of the brain and central nervous system is lipid (fat) and needs essential fatty acids (EFAs) to maintain its health. Omega 3 EFAs support the neural sheath so the nerves communicate properly, reduce brain inflammation, and promote healthy peripheral nerves. DHA promotes the health of the neural tissue. Supplementing with 1-2000mg of Omega 3 oil daily may support brain health. I recommend Nordic Naturals brand ProDHA.

Bodywork for the Brain

Craniosacral therapy uses very light touch focused on releasing fascial (connective tissue) restrictions along the spinal cord and brain to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. Releasing restrictions allows the cerebral spinal fluid which carries nutrients to the brain and central nervous system to flow more freely which may improve nerve communication and nutrient flow to the brain. Very effective if you carry a lot of tension in your face, head, neck, shoulders, back and hips. Use our “Book online” tab to schedule a craniosacral therapy session at either our Saint Charles or Chicago location.
